Our Story – Our Founders
Our Beginnings in Flower Mound
Back in the late 1980s, Bud and Mary Bartley headed to Flower Mound, Texas keeping their main residence in Oklahoma — ready to build something special. Bud had a passion for crafting beautiful homes, and Mary brought her talent for interior design to the mix. Together, they were the perfect team.
A Reputation for Custom Craftsmanship
Before long, the Bartley’s became known in town for their custom designs, timeless details, and that signature wood trim that made every home feel warm and welcoming. Mary took things a step further by furnishing the model homes herself — and here’s the fun part — buyers could actually buy the furniture, art, and décor right out of the model! Every time someone purchased a piece, Mary would replace it with something new. It was an inspired way to keep things fresh and personal.
Expanding the Legacy
By 2000, Bud was ready to focus on new developments back in Oklahoma, and that’s when two talented builders, Jack Oppel and Scott Henry, joined the story. Bud stayed on as a partner, but Jack and Scott took the lead here in Flower Mound, carrying forward the Bartley legacy of craftsmanship and care.
Growth Under New Leadership
Over the years, Jack became the main owner and his energy and passion for people took the company to new heights. He expanded our work into larger custom and speculative homes, launched our Build on Your Lot program, and never stopped dreaming up new ways to help families create the homes they imagined. His wife, Patty Oppel, kept everything running smoothly behind the scenes as our CFO, managing all things financial with her trademark patience and precision.
Honoring Jack Oppel
In June 2024, we said goodbye to Jack after his brave fight with cancer. He was more than a leader — he was family to all of us, and the mark he left on our company and our community will never fade.
Keeping the Company in Trusted Hands
Before he passed, Jack and Patty made a heartfelt decision: instead of selling the company, they wanted to keep it in the hands of the people who had helped build it day by day — Brian Bahe, Lisa Zimmerman, and Catherine Renfro. We were honored when they told us.
Carrying the Tradition Forward
Today, we carry on what Bud, Mary, Jack, Scott, and Patty started — still focused on craftsmanship, creativity, and care for every family we build for. Bud and Mary still stop by, and Patty’s always just a call away. Their footsteps are big ones to follow, but we’re grateful every day to walk in them.
